Our Go-To Supply List
Here's a supply list to get you started with some good, basic painting supplies:
- Tubes of watercolor paint (as opposed to pans) let you control how much paint you are using
- Watercolor paper (we like Strathmore)
- A few small round brushes to start with. Later, experiment with different types of brushes (flat, angled, mop, etc.)
- Small mason jars or cups around the house for cleaning brushes
- A palette is nice to have but not necessary
- Newsprint or drop-cloth to protect your table
Tips for Playing (and Painting) with Watercolors
- Start with one color.
- Use an eye dropper to add water to a bit of paint. Watch and see how the paint changes.
- Clean the brush together in a pot of water. Return to using just one color until you see that your artist has grasped this idea.
- Follow your child's lead by trying it out and seeing what happens. The key here is to NOT push your child or demonstrate your own frustration at their interest level. If you have a less than fun session, wait a few months and try again!
