Holiday Plans (ha!)

Freedom Summer for Young People.jpg

Let’s talk holiday plans!

I know we’re not all gathering around the dinner table with friends (which is a downer) but on the plus-side that might give us more time for lounge-y afternoons on the couch with books.

I personally can’t wait to dig into:

FREEDOM SUMMER by Bruce Watson and adapted by Rebecca Stefoff for Seven Stories Press’ Young People’s Series. I snagged my copy from our local bookstore @picturebookny via Bookshop. It’s the gripping story (retold for teens!) of the summer that was integral in the struggle for civil rights in America.

Not-so-new but recently read and recommend:

HOW WE WIN by George Lakey breaks down the ongoing, relentless, and sustained acts of non-violent action and advocacy. It’s a how-to-guide that goes way beyond one-off protest and marches.

FREEDOM IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE by Angela Y. Davis. A brilliant collection of essays and speeches that threads stories of state violence and oppression around the world with Davis’ vision of a future that’s nothing less than the liberation of humanity itself. This one is such an eye-opener and is also SO accessible.
