In her picture book Dreamers, Yuyi Morales tells a story of love. She brings her child to a better place, becoming an immigrant in a new land:
“Migrantes, you and I,” she writes.
They makes mistakes, don’t understand the language, and stumble into an unbelievable world: the public library.
“Books became our language. Books became our home. Books became our lives.”
In the epilogue, Morales writes about her own journey from Mexico with her two-month-old son. They spent many afternoons together in the public reading rooms in San Francisco immersed in picture books where she discovered that she, too, had her own story to tell.
