Maps + Placemaking with Kids

Lately I have been thinking about how we experience public space from a child’s perspective and how a child might depict the physical world through illustration and mapmaking.

One of my favorite kids’ books of all time is Maps by Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski. (Maps are like the OG of the PR machine — they tell the story the creators want to tell and this book is no exception!)

Maybe you will take a moment to ask a kid something about their neighborhood, park, or street? What they like and what they would change? You might be surprised what you hear.

In the spirit of mapmaking with children, here are some clippings of interesting map-inspired art (here, here, and here) and some collected ideas on placemaking with kids.

Comics Corner

This spring I had the honor of returning to #FerryCon to host a virtual Pop-Up Comics Lab sponsored by the Dobbs Ferry Public Library!

Locals: stay tuned for another exciting comics collab with the public library happening this summer!

Notes from the Newsroom

We celebrated the launch of our latest collaborative issue at The Mother Faire at The Good Witch last month! (Here are some pics if you’d like to see.) Know a kid who wants in on the fun? Have a relative who wouldn’t dare miss an issue? Stop by the club and sign up today!

Significant Miscellany

THE summer reading list for kids.

In the Heights is a great summer family movie that personalizes the experience of DREAMers. (Also it is cheer-out-loud heartbreaking joy!)

Some states are passing laws to ban Critical Race Theory in public schools and universities. This video is a clear breakdown on what’s going down, what CRT is and isn’t, and why it’s important that grown-ups advocate for a curriculum that is culturally responsive so our children are equipped with the knowledge to transform our country for the better.
